About the founder

Anna Alvarez is Artistic Director and founder of Anna Alvarez Compania and a UK based dance artist. Of Latin American descent she has toured and performed extensively across the UK, Argentina, Brazil and Israel.

She trained in contemporary dance at the Facultade de Dança Angel Vianna in Rio de Janeiro and Central School of Speech and Drama and has a BA (hons) degree in Latin American Studies (literature and history) from The University of Manchester. This company is Anna’s weaving together of these three areas. Anna read “100 años de Soledad” when she was 16 and ever since has aimed to bring magical realism into her life and work.

Wearing different hats within her profession she works mainly with Tango and contemporary dance as a performer and choreographer. As a performer she has worked with the Cia de Dança Deborah Colker, choreographers Gustavo Cirico, Frederico Paredes, Maira Maneschy, Yasmeen Godder, Vertigo Dance Company, Ella Mesma Company and she continues to freelance for Vincent Dance Theatre, Artolution, Leandro Palou Tango Academy and Extraordinary Bodies with whom she currently appears in the show “What am I worth?”

Anna is currently studying a Movement Direction MFA at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and has worked as Movement Director in the productions; The Maids (Stockwell Theatre), Two Women Can’t Tango (film by Maria Akim), La Lucha (Crowded Room and Battersea Arts Centre).

As a choreographer her main output has been through her own productions but she has also received commissions to choreograph for Our City Dance festival (South East Dance) and the Sadlers Wells Fusion Showcases with Step Change Dance in 2018 and 2019.

Anna is currently serving as an “Optimist” for China Plate under their new producers program and is working as Assistant Producer for the Theatre Production “My Uncle is Not Pablo Escobar” (Royal Court/ Bush Theatre).
